Gamification Project: Planning Process

The Task:

Final assignment for August class:
1. Find a topic that you know something about.
2. Use the principles of learning (some, not necessarily all) that we are identifying in the WIKI to create a unit of learning.
3. A unit of learning will vary in size depending on the topic, but it does not need to be exhaustive.
4. Share your idea or your learning activity via some creative, non-text means.
5. I will create a place for you to post the link. Due Sept. 4.

Topic: Improving your life when you have fibromyalgia. I’ve had this disease for the last 9 years of my life. There is no cure for it–but I’ve learned that making simple changes in my life makes a world of difference. I want to share my ideas with others who may be suffering.

Method & Audience: I decided to use Prezi and screencasting to create a movie that I talk the viewer through. I like Prezi because it’s clean and more exciting than a Power Point Presentation. Some Prezis I have viewed have a lot of movement– someone who is sensitive could be bothered by it. People with fibromyalgia are often overly sensitive to their enivornments (sounds, noise, smells etc.). So when using Prezi I will work to minimize extra movement and excessive turning. Simple visuals will help support my message. I want to include practical and free or low-cost ideas that you can do to improve your lives. I have met many people with fibro who are on limited incomes or on disability. Fibromyalgics often have a hard time focusing and remembering. This is called fibro fog. That’s why I’m including a webpage in addition to a video. This way you can go back and watch the video and you have additional optional resources to view for those who may be curious to learn more. By keeping all of this together in one place, the person can go back to the page when needed.

In addition to the video, there will be a progress chart that allows one to track their progress on being healthier and taking charge of his/her life. There is a video to explain how to use this chart. The chart in addition to the main video and optional links to information touch upon the following gamification traits. I think these traits help to make this project worthwhile and effective. I have a  network of support group leaders and individuals who have fibromyalgia. I am excited to share this with them and see how it goes. I’d love to hear their feedback for improving what I have put together.

I had success with another project I created–just a text document–but simple and straightforward. It explains what fibromaylgia is. A support group out in Hawaii shares this with their members. Click here to check it out.
